POP-UP DEEP DIVES

Pop-up Deep Dives are not part of a longer tour, but stand on their own.

For all of our safety, all workshops will be online. If you need technical or emotional support around using an online platform for (yet another) workshop, please reach out to us! We want to make all of our workshops as accessible and easeful as possible.

Are these workshops for white people or POC? Are POC welcome? What about mixed race folks who hold both white and POC identities? These workshops are aimed for white folks working on their racism, and we invite white people to unedit their responses as much as possible, to really deeply process and notice the racism that lives inside of us. Witnessing this can be very painful for People of Color - and, POC and mixed race folx are always welcome to join. We trust your desire to be in these spaces and will support you in being there and the extra energy that it takes to be in these spaces. POC always attend our events for free. And we will post POC deep dives as well when they are scheduled. Email us if you have any questions or to set up a phone call.

ALL TIMES ARE IN PACIFIC TIME.

Disrupting Our Whiteness Deep Dive: Judgment. Sunday, October 4th,11-2 PM PDT. Online zoom platform.

Facilitated by Dylan Wilder Quinn and Jennie Pearl. We know what judgment does to other relationships, but we don’t often track that in our anti-racism conversations and communities. Expressing judgment does not generally keep white people in social justice work. If we are building connection for life around anti-racism, judgment cannot be at the root of our relationships. Questions we will explore:

  • When do I jump to critique another white person?
  • How do we tend to our own judgment when it comes up?
  • How does our judgment impact People of Color?
  • How am I trying to absolve myself of white guilt?
  • What are more effective strategies in ending racism?
ABOUT DISRUPTING OUR WHITENESS DEEP DIVES: A deep dive has a maximum of eight participants with a minimum of two individuals. This event is about connecting and building bonds that dismantle racism. Having a small group can slow down how we see, hear, and reach for each other. In Holistic Resistance, we offer programming that simultaneously reaches for Blackness and whiteness. Both are key components for white people who genuinely want to join the fight to end racism. We cannot reach for blackness without a deep understanding to our own relationship to other white people and our own internalized whiteness as we reach for this work. This deep dive is for white people, and will be led by white facilitators. Holistic Resistance believes there needs to be a place for white folx to be with each other and work on our material. AND...it does not erase your work with POC led leadership and movements. We should respect this process as a portion of the work, not the complete picture. White people working with accountability is an essential piece of not putting the burden exclusively on POC to help white folx unlearn our racism. This is one part of a larger series of workshops, creative work, and actions co-created with Aaron Johnson and Porsha Beed that focus on Black liberation called Holistic Resistance. For more information visit www.holisticresistance.com. COST: Sliding scale for the event is from $150 to $550. Costs from this event in particular help fund the many free offerings for People of Color that Aaron and Porsha offer. Please contact holisticresistanceinfo@gmail.com for payment plans and access needs for you to attend. Breaks will be taken as needed and we encourage participants to take care of themselves, their access needs, eat as needed, and move around when needed. REGISTER: Email holisticresistanceinfo@gmail.com. YOUR REGISTRATION WILL BE CONFIRMED WITH PAYMENT. We use venmo and paypal and will email you our info when you register.

Deep Dive: Anxiety and Resilience. Wednesday, November 4th, 5-8 PM PDT. Online zoom platform.

Caring for your own anxiety and building resilience as white folks are two critical pieces of staying in anti-racism work for life. Anxiety can be an opt-out button for white folks, a reason for you not to do this work. Anti-racism can be an avenue for deeply healing your anxiety and trauma, and more deeply grounding your anxiety while doing this work can reduce harm to People of Color. This Deep Dive explores the critical topic of caring for your trauma and anxiety while doing anti-racism work and building connection with People of Color. We will build strategies for resilience for life-long social change. Questions we may explore:

  • How are touch and connection critical pieces of resilience?
  • What do you feel in your body when you feel anxiety? What do you feel in your body when your anxiety is released?
  • How do you ground yourself when conflict comes up around racism?
  • Where do you go to get connection around your experiences of racism?
  • How do you track your capacity for this work?
A deep dive has a maximum of eight participants with a minimum of two individuals. This event is about connecting and building bonds that dismantle racism. Having a small group can slow down how we see, hear, and reach for each other. Small intimate groups allow each person time and attention to process their own unique trauma stories around this particular topic about racism. COST: Sliding scale for the event is from $150 to $550. Please contact holisticresistanceinfo@gmail.com for payment plans and access needs for you to attend. Deep Dive: Shame. Wednesday October 14th, 5-8 PM PDT. Online zoom platform.

Shame often freezes white people. When it shows up internally, the awkwardness and anxiety of shame can dominate a conversation with a Person of Color rather than the connection itself. When it shows up externally, it can harm People of Color who are trying to give helpful feedback or protect themselves. It can take many forms, from overthinking, silence, and avoidance, to defensiveness, jumping to problem solve, and anger. It can keep us from having life-saving conversations about racism with our children, friends, and colleagues. Shame can make racial justice draining and unsustainable, its energy taking up more space in our bodies than an anti-racist action. Together we will explore this cunning tool of dominant culture, how white supremacy benefits from white people getting stuck in shame, and how we can move through it and choose something different. Questions we will explore:

  • What are your default emotional defense settings when you feel shame?
  • Who helps you notice when you're reacting from a place of shame? Who can support you?
  • What does shame feel like in your body?
  • How do you track your capacity, and how do you harm POC when you are over capactiy?
  • What motivates you to do racial justice work?

Holding Black Stories Deep Dive, Thursday October 22nd, 5-8 PM PDT. Online zoom platform.

Reaching for Blackness is about hearing our stories, feeling the story in our skin, in our voices, and in our tears. The strategies you use to hold and hear African heritage stories will be examined. You are invited to this deep dive to hold witness to the power of reaching for others. It is also about you. What stories do you bring to the room? Have you had space to tell your story? Have you told your story to an African heritage person? The purpose of a deep dive is to start a conversation that continues for a lifetime. I invite you to begin here. Deep Dive: The Painful White Apology. Thursday November 12th, 5-8 PM PDT. Online zoom platform.

Apologies about racism from white people can cause more harm than the original racist event. We use this space to slow down reactions to receiving feedback from People of Color, practice getting support and noticing the impact that our reactions can have. We invite white peope to notice their positionality and how that power difference can impact the pain that people of color experience. Questions we will explore:

  • When a person of color tells you you've been racist or hurt them with your whiteness, what comes up for you?
  • Specifically, what stories about yourself come up?
  • What risks does a person of color take on when giving feedback to a white person?
  • How do I continue showing up amidst the discomfort of conflict?
  • Who do I know that can hold me in my process?

Deep Dive: Chronic Overtouch/Undertouch. Wednesday November 18th, 5-8 PM PDT. Online zoom platform.

We have taken on the important conversation of building connection and strategies to support young Black people to create an understanding of how they’ve been hurt around being chronically under-touched or over-touched. We are specifically talking about caring, platonic touch from family or friends. While many different people hold stories of feeling under-touched or over-touched in our culture, we are focused on the effects of how oppression and being marked as untouchable or as hypersexual objects by society has had a direct impact on Black people, and how that ripples out to affect all of us. Questions we may explore:

  • What is the result of touch on the nervous system?
  • How is chronic undertouch a strategy of systemic oppression in jails and prisons and other institutions?
  • How are Black women affected by overtouch in our culture?
  • What are the effects of chronic undertouch on the wellness of Black men?
  • How does chronic undertouch relate to harm towards women, trans people, and queer people?
  • Are your own touch needs met? How does that impact you and others?
  • How can we disrupt with care the ways white supremacy has taught us to not connect through touch?
A deep dive has a maximum of six participants with a minimum of two individuals. This event is about connecting and building bonds that dismantle racism. Having a small group can slow down how we see, hear, and reach for each other. A deep dive lasts for five hours. Breaks will be taken as needed. Participants are welcome to bring snacks and a full meal if desired. The team will consist of two African heritage facilitators with two white support allies. Sliding scale for the event from $250 to $650. Please contact holisticresistanceinfo@gmail.com. A deep dive has a maximum of eight participants with a minimum of two individuals.
